  1. This directory contains a collection of files related to Tcl and
  2. Tk, all of which are available for anonymous FTP.  Below is a
  3. description of what is in the various files in this directory:

  5. tk4.1b2.tar.Z -        This is the most recent release of Tk.  It is
  6.             the second beta release of Tk 4.1, which supports
  7.             Windows and Mac platforms.  It was released on
  8.             February 23, 1996, and includes the sources for the 
  9.             Tk library and the "wish" windowing shell, plus
  10.             reference manual entries and a number of demonstration
  11.             scripts.
  12.  
  13. tk4.1b2.tar.gz -    Same as tk4.1b2.tar.Z except compressed with gzip
  14.             instead of compress.
  15.  
  16. tcl75b2.zip        Same as tcl7.5b2.tar.Z except archived with the
  17.             zip utility, instead of compress.
  18.  
  19. tcl7.5b2.tar.Z -    This is the most recent release of Tcl.  It is
  20.             the second beta release of Tcl 7.5, which supports
  21.             Windows and Mac platforms.  It was released on
  22.             February 23, 1996, and includes the sources for the
  23.             Tcl library and the "tclsh" application, plus
  24.             reference manual entries.

  26. tcl7.5b2.tar.gz -    Same as tcl7.5b2.tar.Z except compressed with gzip
  27.             instead of compress.
  28.  
  29. tk41b2.zip        Same as tk4.1b2.tar.Z except archived with the
  30.             zip utility, instead of compress.
  31.  
  32. win41b2.exe        This is the binary release of Tk 4.1b2 and Tcl
  33.             7.5b2 for Windows (Win32s, Windows 95, or
  34.             Windows NT).  Execute this file under Windows
  35.             to install the Tcl and Tk libraries, executables,
  36.             and documentation.
  37.  
  38. w32s125.exe -        This self-extracting archive contains the
  39.             setup files for Win32s v1.25, which is needed when
  40.             running Tcl and Tk on PCs under Windows 3.1.
  41.             Execute this file on a Windows 3.1 PC to extract
  42.             the Win32s setup files.  Once this is done, run
  43.             the new setup.exe file to install the Win32s system.
  44.  
  45. unz512xN.exe -        UnZip version 5.12 for Win32.  This is a free
  46.             unzip utility for Windows NT and 95 that
  47.             supports long file names.  You can use this
  48.             program to unzip the source distribution files
  49.             with a .zip extension.
  50.             
  51. win31-sample-ext.tar.Z    This file contains a sample Tcl extension for
  52.             Borland C++ 4.5.
  53.  
  54. win31-sample-ext.tar.gz    Same as win31-sample-ext.tar.Z except
  55.             compressed with gzip instead of compress.
  56.  
  57. mactk4.1b2.sea.hqx -    Pre-compiled binaries of Tk 4.1b2 and Tcl 7.5b2
  58.             for the Macintosh (both 68k & PowerPC platforms).
  59.             The file is in binhex format, which is understood
  60.             by Fetch, StuffIt, and many other Mac utilities.
  61.             The unpacked file is a self-installing archive:
  62.             double-click on it and it will create a folder
  63.             containing all you need to run Tcl/Tk on a Macintosh.
  64.  
  65. mac -            This subdirectory contains several other useful
  66.             things for the Macintosh, such as source releases
  67.             organized for easy installation on Macs.
  68.  
  69. tk4.0.tar.Z -        This is the newest stable release of the Tk
  70.             toolkit, released in July 1995.  It includes
  71.             the sources or the Tk library and the "wish"
  72.             windowing shell, plus reference manual entries
  73.             and a number of demonstration scripts.
  74.  
  75. tk4.0.tar.gz -        Same as tk4.0.tar.Z except compressed with gzip
  76.             instead of compress.
  77.  
  78. tk4.0p1.patch.gz -    Compressed patch file that fixes several bugs
  79.             found in Tk 4.0.  Released July 29, 1995.  See

  93. tcl7.4.tar.Z -        This is the newest stable release of the Tcl
  94.             scripting language, released in July 1995.  It

  98. tcl7.4.tar.gz -        Same as tcl7.4.tar.Z except compressed with gzip
  99.             instead of compress.
  100.  
  101. tcl7.4p1.patch.gz -    Compressed patch file that fixes several bugs

  111. tcl7.4p3.patch.gz -    Compressed patch file that fixes several bugs

  116. SpecJava-0.2bin.tar.gz
  117.             A binary release of SpecJava for solaris 2.4
  118.             these files contain a wish binary, and SpecTcl
  119.             configured for Java support
  120.  
  121. SpecTcl-0.1a.tar.Z
  122. SpecTcl-0.1a.tar.gz    These files contain the alpha release of SpecTcl,
  123.             a graphical user interface builder for TK.  SpecTcl
  124.             requires TK4.1a2 to run, as well as a modified
  125.             version of the BLT blt_table geometry manager, which
  126.             is included in the release.  The releases without the
  127.             "a" were missing a couple of files and have been 
  128.             withdrawn. 
  129.  
  130. SpecTcl-0.1_patch_a.gz This is a gzipped patch file to upgrade
  131.             SpecTcl-0.1.tar.gz to SpecTcl-0.1a.tar.gz.  cd to 
  132.             SpecTcl-0.1, and pipe the patch file to
  133.             gunzip | patch -p1
  134.  
  135. html_library-0.1.tar.gz    Simple HTML parser and displayer, written entirely
  136.             in Tcl.  Gzip-ed tar file.
  137.  
  138. html_library-0.3.tar.gz    Enhanced version of html_library-0.1.tar.gz
  139.             Supports all HTML/2.0 features, including
  140.             forms.
  141.  
  142. mx.tar.Z -        Sources and documentation for a mouse-based text
  143.             editor (mx) and terminal emulator (tx) based on
  144.             Tcl.  This is a very old release:  it uses an old
  145.             version of Tcl (which is included) and doesn't
  146.             even use Tk;  it uses an ancient toolkit called
  147.             "Sx".  These tools will eventually be replaced
  148.             with new tools based on Tk and the newest Tcl.
  149.  
  150. mx-2.5.tar.Z -         Newer version of mx (see above) that uses the
  151.             standard X selection mechanism rather than the
  152.             homegrown mechanism used by previous versions. 
  153.             Version 2.5 is not backwards compatible with 
  154.             previous versions (you can't cut and paste between
  155.             the two). Still uses sx and an old version of 
  156.             Tcl (both of which are included).
  157.  
  158. mx-2.5.patch.Z -    Patch file for converting mx 2.4 sources into 2.5.
  159.             Invoke patch in the top-level mx directory
  160.             with the "-p1" switch and an uncompressed version of
  161.             this file, e.g. "patch -p1 < mx-2.5.patch".
  162.  
  163. engManual.tar.Z -    Compressed tar file for a directory containing
  164.             the Tcl/Tk Engineering Manual, which describes
  165.             the coding and testing conventions used to develop
  166.             Tcl and Tk.  I strongly encourage other Tcl/Tk
  167.             developers to follow these conventions, particularly
  168.             if you want to submit code for possible inclusion
  169.             into official releases.
  170.  
  171. book.examples.Z -    Compressed file containing ASCII text for nearly all                of the examples from the book "Tcl and the Tk Toolkit".
  172.  
  173. tclUsenix90.ps -    Postscript for a paper on Tcl that appeared in the
  174.             Winter 1990 USENIX Conference.
  175.  
  176. tkUsenix91.ps -        Postscript for a paper on Tk that appeared in the
  177.             Winter 1991 USENIX Conference.
  178.  
  179. tkF10.ps -        Postscript for Figure 10 of the Tk paper.
  180.  
  181. tut.tar.Z -        A collection of materials from a full-day tutorial
  182.             on Tcl and Tk.  Includes viewgraphs from four
  183.             one-hour talks.
  184.  
  185. In addition, there may be older releases of some or all of the above
  186. files;  look for files with earlier release numbers.
  187.  
  188. Be sure to retrieve files in image mode (type "type image" to FTP)
  189. in order to make sure that you don't lose bits.
  190.  
  191. Most of these files are compressed tar files;  to get back the
  192. original directory hierarchies, type a command like the following for
  193. each file you retrieved:
  194.         zcat tk4.0.tar.Z | tar xf -
  195. This will create a directory named tk4.0 with all the source files and
  196. documentation for that release.  For files with ".gz" extensions, use
  197. a command like the following instead of the one above:
  198.         gunzip -c tk4.0.tar.gz | tar xf -
  199.  
  200. Each of the releases has a README file in the top-level directory that
  201. describes how to compile the release, where to find documentation, etc.
  202.  
  203. In addition to the information here, there are many other Tcl/Tk extensions,
  204. scripts, and applications in the Tcl contributed archive, which is
  205. currently located on the machine ftp.aud.alcatel.com in the public
  206. FTP directory /tcl.
